OSI Food Solutions Spain Doubles Chicken Capacity

OSI Food Solutions Spain now has a much higher capacity for producing chicken products. The current production line is in Toledo, Spain, and it processed 12 million tons of chicken. With the increased capacity, the company will be able to produce 24,000 tons of chicken products.

Now that OSI has expanded in Toledo, the company has the ability to produce more than 45,000 tons of the beef, chicken and pork products that it already produces. The project increased the number of production lines and other services that the company performs, and this means that it also needs to increase its number of employees. Therefore, 20 extra people will be necessary to fill the jobs that are currently being established. One of those jobs is “product development manager,” and it was created to ensure that the most qualified people are hired to be leaders of product development activities and improvement.

People in Spain and Portugal have been increasing the amount of chicken products that they consume recently, and they are creating an ever-increasing demand. The managing director of OSI Spain Jose Maria del Rio stated that the demand increased to 6 percent in the last 10 years. The past three years have shown an even greater increase to 8 percent annually, and Mr. del Rio believes that they are ready to meet this type of increasing demand.

The new building has a large production hall along with areas reserved for shipping and receiving. It also has a location for storing supplies and an area for storing waste containers. The hall includes service areas that can accommodate hot water and nitrogen tanks and oil. Employee comfort has also been considered, so a lounge was constructed just for them. Also, a product development kitchen was added to keep up to date with the new products that the company’s customers will be demanding.

OSI President and Chief Operating Officer David McDonald stated that the expansion was necessary to increase the number of products that the company can offer to clients and customers. The expansion will also help them augment their foodservice and retail accounts and nurture a client base that will remain with the company for years to come. Mr. McDonald is also glad to increase the number of jobs on the market.

OSI improved its food defense system during the expansion as well. A new surveillance system was added that includes a number of indoor cameras and an advanced firefighting system.

OSI Spain is committed to sustainability, employment and agricultural development, and the government recognized this by offering a 1.5 million pound grant to the company for the current overhaul. In addition, OSI Spain was honored for its commitment to employment by the Chamber of Commerce in 2016.
